Paul Smith started training in aikido in 1986 at Indiana University's Tomiki Aikido Club. He holds the rank of 4th dan in Jiyushinkai aikibudo which he has practiced since 1995.
Paul also holds a 5th dan in Hoki-ryu iaido, and Sho-mokuroku in Shinto muso-ryu jo.
He has also practiced Chen style Tai Chi.
